MOVE Background

Registered Charity No. 1077757.

Mobility Vehicles started it's life in September 1997 with the Inaugural Meeting. At this meeting we agreed the underlying principles for which we wanted to work towards and created the basic structure of the Management Committee.

Over the past 2 years, the trustees have worked hard defining the organisation's strategy and operational principles and we have recently been registered as a Charity. Below is a brief summation of why MOVE was created and who it will benefit.

Why did we set up MOVE?

  1. Islington is one of five London Boroughs which does not have a community transport scheme.
  2. It is widely acknowledged by individuals and groups who work with disabled people that accessible transport provision for individuals is inadequate.
  3. Public transport provision is largely inaccessible to individuals with mobility problems.
  4. The quality of public transport services is frequently below acceptable standards.
  5. Existing accessible transport is fragmented, with little joint planning between providers.
  6. There are inadequate systems in place for monitoring or assessing the needs for and quality of transport provision for people with disabilities.

Organisation Objects

The Charity's objects are to provide the relief of disabled persons living in the London Borough of Islington by the provision of an effective and affordable transportation service. This will be done by:

  1. acquiring and running vehicles which are accessible for people with disabilities;
  2. providing a co-ordinated service focusing on the needs of people with disabilities;
  3. providing travel to destinations both within the borough and outside the borough of Islington.

Customers

MOVE customers will be disabled people residing in the London Borough of Islington.

Whilst 'MOVE' does not want to restrict access to its service to any particular group of people  with disabilities, it is recognised that a selection criteria is required. Therefore, customers will need to demonstrate their eligibility through completion of an application form. To meet the criteria customers will have to demonstrate that the use of other services such as bus, underground, private transport is not within their ability or means. Examples include, people requiring wheelchairs, learning disabilities, registered blind etc.

MOVE will be run in co-operation with the other service providers rather than in competition as we are providing a different type of service that will complement that of other organisations in this sector.

Due to the non profit making nature of MOVE and the other organisations, market price will be dependent on balancing what customers can afford to pay for the transportation and also the financial constraints
